What is 'Cape'?
In the mid 1860's diamonds were discovered for the first time in the British Cape Colony (now South Africa), this was a pivotal discovery in our diamond history and as diamond production in Cape town and the Cape region progressed all diamonds originating from the Cape bore the name. Moving into the early 20th century the term cape moved from referencing origin to referencing the faint to light yellow colour of which diamonds from this region generally exhibited. Over the years cape became a recognized term for diamonds with a distinguished yellow colour, and though the GIA now has more definitive terminology (O/P in this case) the word Cape remains a valid description particularly when referencing antique diamonds of this old world time.
